Classic Cars take on a Classic Stage for a Classic Trophy

Intense competition at the recent Quinton Stages Rally in Mid-Wales, with all the crews intent on taking home the Footman James Classic Motor Show Trophy.

Intense competition amongst the Historics’ entrants was the order of the day on the recent Quinton Stages Rally in Mid-Wales, with all the crews intent on taking home the Footman James Classic Motor Show Trophy for the top historic car, won for the last two years by the Ford Escort of Terry Brown.

With Terry absent from the entry list this year as he was taking on the challenge of the Isle of Man Historic Rally, it was left to Ammanford’s Neal James and Kevin Jones to show the others the way home both in Class H2 and as the top historics’ car overall in their 1997cc Ford Escort.

The experienced Welshmen showed their mettle quickly as competitors tackled the first stage of the day – the classic 11.36 mile ‘Dixies’ stage that is so rarely used other than on the UK’s world championship event, Wales Rally of Great Britain. Even for the competitors in more modern machinery, this was a severe – and thrilling – challenge, heading first into Halfway Forest and then across the famous Dixies crossroads and on to the daunting flat-out Route 60 section, described by many as possibly the best rally stage in the world. A true challenge then for the classic cars on this classic stage, specifically sponsored by the organisers of the classic motor show.

With the hopes of H3 class contenders David Roberts and Dei Jones quickly dashed as the steering on their Escort broke early on in the stage, it was left to James and Jones to record the fastest time of 13mins 35secs over the infamous stage, nearly a minute clear of the eventual victors in Class H1 – Clive King and Bob Ward in their trusty 1293cc Austin Mini Cooper S.

So it remained throughout the day’s 45 miles of stages on and around the legendary Epynt Ranges, with James and Jones taking victory in Class H2 ahead of Jason and Hugh Thompson’s British Leyland Mini and the particularly interesting ex-works Morris Marina Coupe of Trevor Godwin and Ian Harrop on its first outing in the forests for over 30 years. King and Ward retained the lead in Class H1 to take the win ahead of Derbyshire’s John Brooks and Phil Harvey in their Austin Mini.

“A great day’s rallying!” gasped Neal James as he finally crossed the line to receive The Footman James Classic Motor Show trophy, presented by Clarion Events. “The fast and smooth stages were superb, but made us work hard for this victory and it is an honour to receive this trophy – just reward for all the day’s efforts.” An additional reward will be the invitation to the winners for their car to appear centre-stage at the NEC show in November.
